    DESCRIPTION
This course offers the fundamentals for understanding and estimating the properties of the substances involved in energy transformation processes. The form to perform quantitative energy balances through the First Law of Thermodynamics, predict the type of process, determine its efficiency and determine the process feasibility using the Second Law of Thermodynamics is described.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the ending of course student will be able to

    • Explain the required properties for the characterization of pure substances
    • Determine the thermodynamic state of a substance through its properties
    • Understand and calculate different modes of energy transfer
    • Understand and apply the first law in closed and open systems
    • Understand and apply the second law to determine the possibility of occurrence of a process

    TOPICS

    • Fundamental concepts and definitions
    • States of pure substance
    • Ideal gases and compressibility factor
    • First law of thermodynamics in closed systems
    • First law of thermodynamics in open systems
    • Second law of thermodynamics
