Believing in Jesus Christ Today

The course Believing in Jesus Christ Today asks about the relevance and significance of the message and the person of Jesus Christ for the men and women of our time, who are looking for meaning and answers to the questions that modern mentality and the situation of poverty and suffering urgently pose.

In order to elaborate a response, the following themes are raised: the meaning and tasks of theological reflection in the university  Theological reflection in the university; challenges to the Christian faith from Modernity and from the situation of unjust poverty and suffering in our environment; ways of access to Jesus Christ, his person and his message, through the testimony of the Gospels and knowledge of the historical context; the most significant aspects of the life and message of Jesus of Nazareth; the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, event and theological meaning; the existence of the Christian today as a follower of Jesus.

Our class is divided in two sections. The first—“History and context”—is devoted to a historical-critical analysis of Jesus of Nazareth and the movement that emerged after his death. Here we will emphasize the cultural context and philosophical and theological novelty of what we now know as the Christian tradition.

The second section—“Contemporary Issues”—deals with new social, cultural, and political developments that challenge the Christian faith: modernity, poverty and injustice, migration, politics, race, gender, and sexual anthropology.
