Overview
The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the midwife's role in the provision of evidence-based
midwifery care. The purpose of the module is to develop the student's understanding and knowledge of normality
in the context of midwifery care. Related anatomy and physiology is explored throughout the module. The
midwifery care of the woman in the first, second and third stage of labour is examined in detail. The different
positions woman can adopt for labour and childbirth are highlighted along with the supporting evidence. The
role of the support person in labour is discussed along with the midwife's role in a partnership of care with
the woman and other health care personnel. Physiological adaptation of the newborn along with skills specific
to newborn resusitation are introduced. The care of the baby during and after birth is incorporated, including
the first examination of the newborn. Infant feeding is reviewed, in particular the anatomy and physiology of
the breast and the importance of correct infant positioning and attachment. In this module students will also
be introduced to the indicators of fetal well-being and electronic fetal monitoring.
