Overview
Introduction to manufacturing, Primary and secondary processing of metals, casting, forming, joining of metals.
Machine tools and their automation. Cutting tools and cutting tool materials. Tool behaviour and tool life.
Non-traditional machining processes e.g. electrical discharge machining. Additive processes such as physical
vapour and chemical vapour deposition, etc. 3D printing and rapid prototyping. Computer numerical control of
machine tools. Computer aided design and manufacture. Flexible manufacturing systems. Introduction to
metrology. Measurement of small linear and angular displacements. Surface metrology. Economics of production.
Competitiveness and productivity in production. Costing systems, cost reduction and control, profit
optimisation in manufacturing. Five laboratory sessions run throughout the semester (participation and report
deemed compulsory).
