Study Abroad Program Description

ISA offers both a semester and a summer Latin American Studies program where you will learn among fellow international students and be taught by the faculty at the Universidad de Belgrano.

The semester sessions are designed for students at all levels of Spanish and will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of Argentina and Latin America. You can also advance your Spanish language through optional Spanish language courses during the semester sessions. PALAS courses are instructed in English and PEAL courses are instructed in Spanish. Semester students wishing to take one or more courses with locals should enroll in the Latin American Studies and Courses with Locals program.

Please note that all A semester programs include an intensive month of 120 contact hour Spanish Language courses for credit prior to the start of the semester program at the Universidad de Belgrano.   The semester B programs do not include the intensive month.

The summer Latin American Studies session is designed for students at the Advanced level of Spanish and will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the cultural aspects of Argentina and Latin America.  Students will take two classes taught in Spanish: Argentina Literature and Culture and Civilization of Latin America.

Course Selection

Through this program, you will take two advanced courses taught in Spanish. This program falls under the PEAL category (Programa de Estudios Argentinos y Latinoamericanos) at the UB.  Please see the two courses listed below for more detail.

Requests for syllabi can be made to the Argentina Program Manager.

Language Placement

Enrollment in courses is determined by the results of a language placement exam administered by the Universidad de Belgrano prior to departure. Please note that your performance on the placement exam may not reflect the number of semesters of language instruction you’ve already completed at your home university. We strongly suggest that students prepare for the language placement exam by reviewing previous coursework.

Course Credits

The contact hour at the Universidad de Belgrano is 45 minutes. The ISA Cover Letter that will accompany your transcript upon completion of your program will reflect the adjusted U.S. 50-minute contact hour and updated transfer credit recommendations. Please discuss credit transfer with your home university prior to departure.

Accessibility & Accommodations

With our wide portfolio of program types and locations, we’re confident there is a suitable, accessible program for each student.

Securing accommodations abroad can take time, so we ask that those with requests inform ISA early in the advising process. We recommend reaching out to your Program Manager or our Accessibility Team (accessibilityteam@worldstrides.com) to discuss your accessibility needs or accommodations abroad.

Destination Information

Our diversity pages for each ISA destination include information on Indigenous communities, languages, race and ethnicity, religion, LGBTQIA+, and disability access. We hope it will help when reflecting upon and contextualizing intersectionality in your host community.

Identity Blog

ISA offers students the opportunity to blog about their experiences abroad from their own diverse perspectives. These posts can be found on the ISA Student Blog, and interested students should email diversity@studiesabroad.com for more information.

Housing

ISA Housing in Buenos Aires allows you to enjoy a memorable experience by living in an Argentine home with a local family, in an apartment with other ISA students or in a residencia with other international students. With an open mind and flexibility, the experience of living in another culture will be both educational and highly rewarding. This will be a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a new place and live as a local would, so take advantage and let yourself become a Porteño!

We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations; however, housing preference requests cannot be guaranteed.

Homestay

For those seeking full linguistic and cultural immersion during their time abroad, living with a host family is the ideal housing option. Carefully selected by ISA’s resident staff, each host family ensures a welcoming and comfortable living environment tailored to your needs. You'll enjoy the convenience of daily breakfast and dinner, along with weekly laundry service.

ISA host families are located in some of Buenos Aires' most vibrant and prestigious neighborhoods, including Belgrano, Palermo, and Recoleta, offering an authentic glimpse into daily life in the capital city. These homestays provide easy access to the Universidad de Belgrano, enhancing your experience.

It’s important to note that, reflecting the unique culture and lifestyle of Buenos Aires, most homestays consist of a single, older woman or an older couple. While a limited number of nuclear families are available, ISA cannot guarantee a specific homestay arrangement for students.

Residencia

If you opt to live in the residencia, you will enjoy the privacy of your own room while sharing common spaces like the kitchen and terrace with fellow residents, fostering a communal and interactive living experience. Meals and laundry service are not included, allowing you the flexibility to manage these aspects independently.

The residencia is conveniently located in the lively Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, renowned for its cafes, restaurants, and shopping, and offers an approximately 25-minute commute to campus. For more details about this housing option or to request a residencia contract, please contact ISA.

Apartment

For those seeking greater independence during their time abroad, apartments offer an excellent housing option. Assigned on a first-come, first-served basis with limited availability, each apartment is fully furnished, centrally located, and includes rent and utilities as part of the program price. Please note that meals and laundry service are not included, allowing you the flexibility to manage these aspects of daily life on your own.

A refundable security deposit is required for this housing option. ISA reserves the right to retain some or all of the deposit in cases of property damage or if utility usage exceeds the allotted monthly amount.

Independent Housing

If you prefer to secure your own housing, you have the option to arrange accommodations independently. By choosing this option, you will receive a discount equivalent to the housing portion of the program price. Please note that you are solely responsible for researching, booking, and managing your chosen housing, as well as covering all associated fees, deposits, and rent directly with the housing provider.
