Intermediate Grammar and Conversation I

Course Title: Intermediate Spanish I & II
*Please note: the decription reflects both Intermediate Spanish I (instructed during the first summer session) and Intermediate Spanish II (instructed during the second summer session)
Pre-requisites: one year of Spanish or placement test

I. LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION:
This course is given in Spanish.

II. AUDIENCE:
This course is specifically designed for ISA students.

III. CONTACT HOURS:
This course will meet for 90 contact hours

IV. GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION AND COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Spanish level I is the first half of intermediate level in ULCR lower-division Spanish program. This course continues to develop on the skills acquired in beginners Spanish level, but students begin to work with more advanced goals, including an integrated use of various tenses. The student can now follow a wide range of sequential oral directions from various familiar contexts. The student is able to follow simple written instructions up to ten different steps. The student can also read two ? three paragraph standard formulaic texts for both specific and general ideas. The student is able to relate simple sequences of events in the past, present and the future. The student also has an advanced level of simple conversations skills, being able to interrupt the conversation and make arguments while debating a controversial topic. The student is able to write short personal narrative, descriptions, and explanations.
Intermediate II level is the second part of intermediate level in ULCR lower-division Spanish program. This course continues to develop on the skills acquired in Spanish Intermediate I, but students begin to work with more advanced goals, including an integrated use of various tenses. The student can now follow a wide range of sequential oral directions from various familiar contexts. The student is able to follow simple written instructions up to ten different steps. The student can also read two ? three paragraph standard formulaic texts for both specific and general ideas. The student is able to relate simple sequences of events in the past, present and the future.

II. EVALUATION CRITERIA
Proyecto de clase: 20%
- Examen oral: 20%
- Examen parcial: 25%
- Examen final: 25%
- Dramatizaciones: 10%

III. ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Classes start on time. Arriving more than 10 minutes late is equivalent to being tardy. Three tardies equal one absence. Students who arrive more than 30 minutes late are marked absent. A student who accumulates four (4) or more absences fails the course.

IV. DESCRIPTION OF SPECIAL ASSIGMENTS/ACTIVITIES:
A- Write a journal every week
B- Oral exposition: cultural Project on Costa Rica C- Oral participation: every day activities.

V. OTHER EXPECTATIONS, RULES,CONDUCT GUIDELINES,SPECIAL RECOMMENDATIONS:
All assignments must be handed in on the due date. Exams must be taken on the assigned date and will only be made up in case of documented emergencies. If an emergency occurs, it is the student's responsibility to communicate with the professor and make arrangements. There is a 17,000 colon charge for make-up tests/activities which require the professor´s presence. The University provides, upon request, appropriate academic adjustments for qualified students with disabilities. Any student with a documented disability (physical or cognitive) who requires academic accommodations should contact the Academic Coordinator as soon as possible to request an official letter outlining authorized accommodations. Approved accommodations will not change the basic elements of the course/class.
