The purpose of this module, conducted in Spanish, is to allow students to critically engage with social, political and cultural issues in contemporary Spain. Discussion and critical analysis are based on a range of authentic material: namely literature, music, media and films. The module focuses on recent changes related to gender, immigration and Historical Memory in Spain. Students will acquire a thorough understanding of contemporary Spain and will develop advanced written and reading skills through developing their range of expression, accuracy and style.
1. Use a broad lexical repertoire to express ideas with accuracy: the learner will have knowledge of and ability to use the vocabulary of the target language (lexical and grammatical elements) and develop awareness and control of the organisation of meaning.
2. Show a relatively high level of grammatical control and a grasp of complex syntax to enable full comprehension and confident expression in a variety of contexts.
3. Understand texts, articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints.
4. Develop academic writing and produce reviews of cultural artefacts related to Spain.
5. Demonstrate an awareness and critical thinking of socio-economic and cultural issues in contemporary Spain.
6. Demonstrate research skills from an array of resources such as literature, media and audio visual material.
7. Extract relevant information from digital literacies in order to enhance the student’s research tools and assess the resources available on-line.
