  • Overview

    This module, conducted in the target language, is aimed at advanced learners who wish to further develop their writing and analytical skills for academic purposes. Learners work with texts on current affairs from the target language media. Students learn to understand and summarise texts and produce a critical analysis while gaining accuracy and fluency on linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences. Learners will also improve range of expression in written production in the target language through the specific writing activities. 

    Learning Outcomes
    1. Understand and recognise implicit meaning from a wide range of written registers drawn from a variety of sources (for example journalistic, literary, artistic).
    2. Extract information, ideas and opinions from the sources.
    3. Discuss the ideas drawn from the texts and critically assess them sharing their own views.
    4. Produce well organised and structured written discourse of various text types on complex current affairs subjects, showing a controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices in the foreign language.
    5. Formulate views and opinions with precision and relate them to those of others as well as use persuasive techniques.
    6. Recognise a wide range of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, appreciating register shifts.
    7. Use a broad lexical repertoire to express ideas with accuracy: the learner will have knowledge of and the ability to use and develop awareness and control of the organisation of meaning.
    8. Develop critical analysis and cultural awareness.
    9. Present information and defend a point of view.
