OverviewThis module offers a survey of the British imperial history from the heyday of empire at the turn of the twentieth century to decolonization after the Second World War. Taking a broadly chronological approach, the module considers such questions as: the governance of the empire, including the emergence of self-government and the evolution of the Commonwealth; ideas and ideologies of empire; interactions between the empire and indigenous peoples, including strategies for imperial control and forms of co-operation or resistance; the impact of empire on British life ? political, cultural, economic and diplomatic.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are converted to semester credits/quarter units differently among U.S. universities. Students should confirm the conversion scale used at their home university when determining credit transfer.
